The Bears’ fake punt worked: After a direct snap to defensive back DeAndre Houston-Carson, linebacker Barkevious Mingo took a handoff 11 yards for a conversion in the second quarter of the Titans’ 24-17 win on Sunday.

No matter. The Titans defense stopped Chicago on third down a few plays later, forcing a punt.

Titans linebacker Will Compton, currently on the team’s practice squad, saw right through the sequence of events while watching the game from home.

“That fake punt was meaningless,” Compton tweeted with tongue in cheek. “We just wanted to add another 3rd down stop to the team stats. Got some ground to make up.”

Indeed they do. The Titans entered Sunday’s game allowing opponents to convert 61.9% of the time on third down, worst in the league by a significant margin.

They made up some ground Sunday.
